Government Documents

Mission Statement:

Campbell Library is a selective depository for U.S. Government publications, receiving 42% of the publications distributed by the Federal Depository Library Program (FDLP) and is also a depository for publications of the state of New Jersey.

Government Documents are publications issued at government expense or by the authority of a governmental body. The purpose of the Government Documents Collection is to provide open access to government information by all citizens and to support the academic and curricula needs of the university community.

Circulation:

Government documents do not circulate.

Evaluation:

The evaluation of the collection is an ongoing process. The Documents Librarian continually assesses, reviews, and updates the collection with regard to the University's mission, community needs, and support of Academic programs.

Copyright:

Since there are no copyright restrictions on government material, all citizens are allowed to copy any Government Document material ($.10 a page).

Collection Access:

All documents housed in open stacks are available for patron browsing during the times the University Library is open. Documents are housed on the second floor of the library, Room 245.

Location:

Most Government Documents are located in the Government Documents stack area and arranged using SuDoc classification. Certain items are located alphabetically by title within the Periodicals Area or in the Reference or Circulating collections organized using LC classification. CD-ROMs are organized using SuDoc numbers and are located to the right of the Government Documents reference desk.

Sources for Regulations:

The law governing depository libraries as well as regulations and procedures for the administration of the collection are contained in:

  • Depository Library Act of 1962.
  • Title 44 of the United States Code.
  • U.S. Superintendent of Documents, Instructions to Depositories (GP 3.26:D 44/977).

Five-Year GPO Inspection:

The FDLP conducts onsite inspections of each of the Federal Depositories throughout the United States. A trained GPO inspector makes appointments to conduct thorough inspections of all operations with the Documents Librarian, the Documents Assistant, the University Assistant Librarian, and the Dean of the Libraries. The inspection ensures that depository libraries are operating under the strict regulations set forth in Title 44.
