Daily Newspapers Moved to the Current Periodicals Reading Room

By: Connie

I'm talking about newspapers.  There's just something about holding up the front section of a newspaper and getting a quick visual of the news of the world/region and a suggestion of importance-you know-placement on the page.

Yes, we have hundreds of newspapers available online through several databases.  Our broadest newspaper coverage is in a database called Newsbank; this database brings to your fingertips articles from newspapers around the world.  We also have separate subscriptions to The New York Times and the Wall Street Journal.  However, none of this online access gives you graphics!  On the other hand, if you are looking for an article on a specific topic, you really can't beat the online searching capability afforded through online access.

But, suppose you just want to see the front page.  Or suppose you just want to see the pictures captured in the sports section.  You need to get your hands on the print copy of the paper.  The library has long held subscriptions to a number of newspapers:  Courier Post, Gloucester County Times, New York Times, Philadelphia Business Journal, Philadelphia Inquirer, Philadelphia Tribune, Star Ledger, Times London, Times Literary Supplement, Trenton Times, USA Today, Wall Street, Washington Post, Whit.  These were kept in a "secured" room, and you would have to ask a librarian or staff member to get the paper for you.  Now that we have extensive online coverage, maintaining a complete run of the print newspapers is no longer necessary.   With this new reality, the library has recognized the value of putting the newspapers in an open area where you can just browse the papers at will.

These papers are now displayed in the end room (the Rt. 322 end) of Current Periodicals.  The most recent edition of the paper is prominently displayed on the front of the shelf.  If you want to see the previous edition, just lift that shelf front and sort through the week's accumulation to find the edition you need.  Please understand that only one week's run of each newspaper is being maintained in print.

Because Sunday editions are so much thicker, they are displayed in a separate newspaper rack As great as online access is, sometimes online just doesn't get it. in that same room.  We hope you will enjoy this unfettered access to the papers.  All we ask is that you please keep the newspaper sections together and then just leave them on one of the stacking station carts found in the periodicals section.
