Writing and art contests - still accepting submissions!

November 7, 2016

Rowan University Libraries and the Rowan Writing Center invite you to participate in a contest inspired by a passage from this year’s RU Reading Together novel, Americanah!

Interested writers and artists should respond to the following passage:

“The only reason you say that race was not an issue is because you wish it was not. We all wish it was not. But it’s a lie...But the minute you step outside, race matters. But we don’t talk about it. We don’t even tell our white partners the small things that piss us off and the things we wish they understood better, because we’re worried they will say we’re overreacting, or we’re being too sensitive...It’s true. I speak from experience.”

Category 1: What feelings, personal experiences or thoughts are evoked by this passage?

Respond to this passage with any of the following types of writing:

  • Personal essay
  • Short story (fiction or nonfiction)
  • Poem
